Jonah McDonald is a 14-year Atlanta resident and former Appalachian Trail thru-hiker. An educator, naturalist, and outdoorsman, Jonah has worked as an outdoors outfitter, at several Atlanta-area independent schools (where he started and ran wilderness and outdoors programs), and is the founder and president of Sure Foot Adventures (an outdoors guide service that leads hiking, camping, backpacking and outdoors education programs). In each of these professional capacities and as a hobby, Jonah has spent countless days exploring metro-Atlanta greenspaces and has compiled an extensive list of natural areas in and around the city. He is the author of Hiking Atlanta's Hidden Forests: Intown and Out, a guidebook to trails in the metro area.

Jonah is also a storyteller and tour guide. A professional storyteller, he gives performances to groups of all ages. And Jonah has developed a Bicycle Tour of the Battle of Atlanta that he conducts several times a year.

Jonah will be speaking about the many greenspaces and trails included in his book - particularly the hidden or off-the-beaten-path areas nature photographers, birders, and tree people love to explore. He will especially focus on the greenspaces of Gwinnett County in this talk.  Maybe we can even learn and appreciate what Jonah refers to as Sentinel or Champion Trees in these Hidden Forests.

Having spoken at other chapters of GNPA in the past, Jonah's goal is to help us find new locations for nature photography, seek out new and interesting subjects along the trails, and connect us to the wider movement to make Atlanta a city known for its natural resources, trees, and trails. We hope you will leave excited to explore new places, inspired to take positive action in your community, and with a smile on your face after having spent time listening to a fellow nature-lover who is a seasoned public speaker.

To learn more about Jonah's guidebook, go to   He will have copies of his book available for those interested. Price is $19.95 plus tax and Jonah can take check, cash, or credit.

So, come join us for an interesting evening.
