John Gerlach earned his wildlife ecology degree from Central Michigan University in 1977.  After graduation, he followed his burning passion to become a professional nature photographer and photo educator.  With his in-depth science background and dedication to nature photography, he quickly mastered close-up, landscape, and wildlife photography.

John is a dynamic public speaker.  His burning enthusiasm for photography and willingness to share his knowledge makes him an inspirational photography instructor.  Over forty years, John has taught hundreds of field workshops and one-day seminars.  John leads several winter photo tours of Yellowstone National Park by snowcoach and has led forty photo tours of the best game parks – Samburu, Lake Nakuru and Masai Mara – Kenya offers.  Since 1986, John has taught his in-depth photo workshops near Munising, MI during August and fall color in October.

John is an expert at photographing hummingbirds with natural light and multiple flash.  John is an innovator in outdoor flash photography who pioneered many new methods to light close-ups and landscapes.  The flash program John presents will open-up a whole new way for you to think about and use flash.

2018 05 Gerlach5John also teaches field programs and seminars for Arizona Highways Photo Workshops and week-long intensive photo workshops in Great Smoky Mountain National Park with the Great Smoky School of Photography.  And if this schedule isn’t enough, John is a published author with six best-selling books about nature photography, writes a column for Nature Photographer magazine, and now works as a contributing writer for Canon cameras and field tests their equipment!

You will be placed on the wait list in the order you registered. You'll  have 24 hours to accept the opening before it's closed and given to the next person in line.

Trip and Event Cancellation and Refund Policy

The GNPA will make every good faith attempt to follow through with each field trip, workshop or event (hereafter referred to as “Trip”) as planned and described on the GNPA website. However, there may be circumstances that arise beyond the control of the GNPA that affect its ability to complete the Trip as planned.

2. If the GNPA cancels a Trip prior to the start date for these or any other reason, the GNPA will refund all monies paid the GNPA.

3. ATTENDEE CANCELLATION POLICY

A member who is unable to attend for any reason will be responsible for payments as described in the Trip announcement. Trip insurance is inexpensive and strongly encouraged.

Cancellations are permitted before March 1, 2018; a $20 cancellation fee will be charged for each cancelled registration. NO REFUNDS WILL BE GIVEN AFTER END OF DAY FEBRUARY 28, 2018.

4. Personal safety is of utmost importance. Nature photography includes inherent risks which all participants must evaluate for themselves as to the safety of any activity based on their personal abilities. Be constantly aware of your surroundings and any potential hazards which could result in injury to you or others. Do not place yourself in danger.
